Enterprise 2.0 and the Hostage Dog

Last night I had the pleasure of speaking to the Seattle area chapter of the Project Management Institute about one of my favorite topics: communications. The speech was specifically about how you can use “Web/Enterprise 2.0” applications to improve communications with your team, management, and end users. Now don’t let your eyes glaze over at the terms “Web/Enterprise 2.0.” Stick with me and you’ll sound really smart to your uninitiated friends.

The second generation of Internet applications (Web 2.0) features  interactive forms of communications like FaceBook, Blogs, Wiki’s and Twitter. The first generation that Al Gore invented (Web 1.0) was really electronic bill boards like websites. “Enterprise 2.0” is just the use of interactive Internet applications to improve how you communicate so that you can be a more effective project manager.

Unfortunately for me, the speaker at the meeting last month slept through his own presentation. He is a nationally known and well respected presenter who spent an exhausting day teaching a class. He lay down to take a well deserved nap before his talk. He woke up just in time to catch the redeye home, but missed the entire dinner meeting.

The VP of Programs wanted to avoid a no-show on my part. Being a resourceful project manager, she called me up at Noon yesterday and said, “Dennis, just want to remind you about the meeting tonight. We’re really looking forward to your presentation. And just to make sure you show up on time and do a great job, we’re holding your dog hostage.”

Rascal at Cancer Charity Walk

She had my attention. My dog just turned 15 last Wednesday and I’ve grown rather attached to him. I showed up at 12:30 and made sure I was ready for the presentation. Fortunately things went well and Rascal was returned safely. No hard feelings.

On a serious note the presentation is available here. I hope you enjoy it. If you have stories about how you’ve used Enterprise 2.0 to manage projects please share them here or send them to at dennis@dennisbrooke.com. Stories about mistakes are welcome too. They’re often the funniest, and I will protect the guilty.
